Hotel SEO in 2026: SEO for hotels now includes AI answers

By Cloute · Published October 2, 2026

The short answer

Hotel SEO is the work of getting a hotel found, and booked directly, when travellers search for a place to stay. In 2026 that means two results: where the property appears on Google, and whether AI engines such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews name it when a traveller asks where to stay. When Cloute tested 256 hotel websites, 15.2% turned away a plain automated request, which is how an AI engine can be stopped before it reads a page.

What SEO for hotels covers

  • Google Business Profile and hotel listing details: amenities, check-in times, photos.
  • Pages for what the hotel is near: the airport, the stadium, the convention centre, the beach.
  • Room, amenity and policy pages with the facts travellers ask about: parking, shuttle, pets, breakfast.
  • Reviews across Google and the travel sites.
  • Technical health, including a booking path search engines and AI crawlers can follow.

What changed: travellers ask AI

A traveller who asks an AI engine for a hotel near an airport with a free shuttle and late check-in gets a few names. Booking sites and review sites are usually among what the engine reads, which is why a hotel's own page has to state the same facts plainly. Across 64,441 AI answers about local businesses, engines named a business 84% of the time when they had opened one of its own pages while answering, and 16% when they had not.

What the hotel website study found

  • 15.2% of 256 hotel sites answered a script-free request with a block or a challenge, against 29.5% of car dealership sites and 3.4% of dental sites.
  • 4.7% sent a near-empty homepage without JavaScript, the highest of the three industries tested.
  • No hotel site in the sample blocked an AI search crawler in robots.txt.

What a hotel should check

  • Whether the property's own pages state distance to nearby landmarks, parking cost, shuttle hours and pet policy in plain text.
  • Whether those facts match what the booking sites say.
  • Whether bot protection on the hotel or brand website lets verified AI crawlers through.
  • What the AI engines say when asked the questions travellers ask, from the cities they travel from.

Cloute measures every property each month on ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews against the local rivals customers weigh it against, and its team does the work to move the result.

Questions people ask

What is hotel SEO?

Hotel SEO is search engine optimization for hotels: getting a property found for searches about where to stay, and winning the direct booking. Americans search Google for "hotel seo" about 590 times a month. Search volumes are average monthly Google searches in the United States, from Google Ads keyword data, October 2026.

Can a hotel be recommended by ChatGPT?

Yes. ChatGPT names hotels its sources connect to the location and the need in the question. A hotel whose own pages state those facts, and can be opened by AI crawlers, gives the engine a first-hand source.

Do hotel websites block AI crawlers?

Not in robots.txt, in our sample. But 15.2% of the 256 hotel sites tested turned away a plain automated request through bot protection.

What should a hotel SEO agency report?

Direct bookings and rankings, plus how often each AI engine names the property, how often it is named first, and which hotel is named instead, on the same questions each time.
