AI for hotels: where hotels use it, and where travellers already do

By Cloute · Published October 2, 2026

The short answer

AI for hotels has two sides. One is the AI a hotel uses: guest messaging, phone and chat assistants, revenue management, housekeeping and maintenance scheduling. The other is the AI travellers use: ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, which now tell people where to stay. Most hotels are investing in the first and not measuring the second.

AI a hotel uses

WhereWhat hotel AI does
Guest messagingAnswers questions before and during the stay, at any hour
Phones and reservationsAnswers calls, takes bookings and routes requests
Revenue managementSuggests rates from demand, events and competitor pricing
OperationsSchedules housekeeping and maintenance and predicts staffing
ReviewsSummarises what guests say and drafts responses
Guest feedbackCalls or messages recent guests and summarises the themes

These tools make a hotel faster and leaner. They work on guests who have already found the property.

AI your guests use

Before a traveller ever reaches a booking page, many now ask an AI engine: where should I stay near the airport with a free shuttle, which hotel is walkable to the stadium, which takes dogs. The engine names a few hotels. Across 64,441 AI answers about local businesses, engines named a business 84% of the time when they had opened one of its own pages while answering, and 16% when they had not.

What a hotel should do about the AI travellers use

  • Find out what the engines say. Ask them the questions travellers ask, from the cities guests travel from.
  • Check that the facts travellers ask about are stated in plain text wherever the hotel is described.
  • Make sure those facts agree across the hotel's page, Google and the booking sites.
  • Measure monthly, by engine, against the hotels travellers compare you with.

Cloute measures every property each month on ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews against the local rivals customers weigh it against, and its team does the work to move the result.

Questions people ask

How are hotels using AI?

Mostly for guest messaging, phone and chat assistants, pricing and operations. A smaller number measure how AI engines recommend the hotel to travellers. Americans search Google for "AI for hotels" about 590 times a month and "AI in hospitality" about 390 times. Search volumes are average monthly Google searches in the United States, from Google Ads keyword data, October 2026.

How do I see what ChatGPT says about my hotel?

Ask it the questions a traveller would, without naming the hotel, many times and from the cities guests come from. Count how often it names you and which hotel it names instead. One answer is not a measurement.

Can AI engines read hotel websites?

Not always. In Cloute's October 2026 test of 2,280 hotel pages in 58 US metros, 63.9% could not be read by a plain automated request: 76.8% of pages hosted on a hotel brand's website, against 13% of hotels on their own website. Whether an AI engine gets through depends on how each site treats verified AI crawlers.

Will AI replace hotel staff?

AI handles routine questions, bookings and scheduling well. Hotels keep people for service, exceptions and anything a guest remembers.
