AEO strategy: a six-step plan for getting named in AI answers

By Cloute · Published October 2, 2026

The short answer

An AEO strategy is a plan for getting a business named in the answers AI engines give. It has six steps: measure where you stand, make sure the engines can read your pages, answer the questions customers ask, keep your facts consistent, be present in the sources engines already read, and measure again on the same questions. The same plan is called a GEO strategy or an AI search strategy. Across 64,441 AI answers about local businesses, engines named a business 84% of the time when they had opened one of its own pages while answering, and 16% when they had not.

The six steps of an AEO strategy

StepWhat to doWhy
1. BaselineAsk each engine the questions your customers ask, many times, and count who is namedOn a first measurement, 70% of answers named a competitor or nobody
2. Be readableCheck that AI crawlers can open your pages and that the facts are in the page sourceMost AI crawlers do not run JavaScript, and firewalls can turn them away
3. Answer the questionState a direct answer in the first sentences of a page about that questionAn engine quotes what it can lift cleanly
4. Be consistentKeep name, address, hours and services identical everywhereConflicting facts give an engine a reason to choose someone else
5. Be present elsewhereEarn mentions in the reviews, directories and local sources engines read for your marketEngines draw on third-party sources as well as your own site
6. Measure againRepeat the baseline on identical questions and identical enginesAnswers vary from run to run, so only like-for-like comparisons show real movement

Where most AEO strategies go wrong

  • Starting with content before measuring. Without a baseline nobody can say what worked.
  • Treating one answer as the result. A single run can differ an hour later.
  • Measuring the brand name instead of the questions customers ask before they know the brand.
  • Publishing many near-identical pages. One page that answers a real question does more.
  • Leaving out competitors. Answer share only means something next to the rival's.
  • Reporting one engine. A business can be named often on one and rarely on another.

AEO strategy for a local business

A local business competes for a place, not a category. Ask the questions from the towns customers live in, measure each location separately against the rivals in its own market, and expect answers to differ a few miles apart.

Questions people ask

What is an AEO strategy?

A plan for getting a business named in AI-generated answers: baseline measurement, readable pages, direct answers, consistent facts, third-party presence and repeat measurement.

Is a GEO strategy different from an AEO strategy?

No. Generative engine optimization and answer engine optimization describe the same goal, so the strategy is the same.

What are AEO best practices?

Measure before you change anything, make sure AI crawlers can read the site, answer real questions plainly, keep facts consistent, and compare only identical questions on identical engines.

How long does an AEO strategy take to show results?

It varies by market. Judge it by the trend across many answers on the same questions, not by a single response.
