Hotel marketing in 2026: strategy, channels and where AI search fits
By Cloute · Published October 2, 2026
The short answer
Hotel marketing in 2026 runs across search, online travel agencies, metasearch, paid media, social, email and reputation, and one newer channel most properties do not measure: the answers AI engines give when a traveller asks where to stay. In Cloute's October 2026 test of 2,280 hotel pages in 58 US metros, 63.9% could not be read by a plain automated request: 76.8% of pages hosted on a hotel brand's website, against 13% of hotels on their own website.

Hotel marketing channels, and what to measure in each
| Channel | What it does | What to measure |
|---|---|---|
| Search and Google hotel listings | Captures travellers searching for a place to stay | Rankings, listing views, clicks to book |
| Online travel agencies | Puts the property in front of travellers comparing options | Bookings, commission cost, share of direct bookings |
| Metasearch and paid search | Buys placement when a traveller is ready to book | Cost per booking, return on spend |
| Social and video | Builds familiarity before the trip is planned | Reach in feeder markets, engaged views |
| Email and loyalty | Brings back past guests | Repeat bookings, direct revenue |
| Reviews and reputation | Decides between two similar hotels | Rating, review count and recency, response rate |
| AI answers | Decides which hotel ChatGPT, Gemini and others name | Share of answers naming the property, first-pick rate, hotel named instead |
A hospitality marketing strategy that holds up
- Market what the hotel is near. Travellers search by airport, stadium, hospital, campus and convention centre before they search by hotel name.
- State the facts travellers ask about: parking cost, shuttle hours, pet policy, breakfast, late check-out.
- Keep those facts the same everywhere they appear, on the hotel's page, Google and the booking sites.
- Treat reviews as marketing. Respond to all of them, and fix what comes up twice.
- Measure direct bookings separately from commissioned ones.
- Check what AI says. Ask the engines the questions travellers ask and see which hotel they name.
Where AI search fits in hotel marketing
A traveller who asks an AI engine for a hotel gets a few names. The answer is built from pages the engine reads at that moment: booking sites, review sites and hotels' own pages. Across 64,441 AI answers about local businesses, engines named a business 84% of the time when they had opened one of its own pages while answering, and 16% when they had not.
Choosing a hospitality marketing agency
Ask any hotel or hospitality marketing agency what it measures beyond bookings and rankings. For AI answers, ask whether it reports each engine separately, measures the hotels travellers compare you with on the same answers, and compares identical questions over time.
Cloute measures every property each month on ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews against the local rivals customers weigh it against, and its team does the work to move the result.

What is hotel marketing?
Hotel marketing is the work of filling rooms at the best rate: search, booking sites, advertising, email, reputation and, now, AI answers. Americans search Google for "hotel marketing" about 320 times a month and "hospitality marketing" about 390 times. Search volumes are average monthly Google searches in the United States, from Google Ads keyword data, October 2026.
What is a good hotel marketing strategy?
One that measures each channel by bookings and cost, protects direct bookings, keeps the hotel's facts consistent everywhere, and covers every place travellers now decide, including AI answers.
What does a hospitality marketing agency do?
It runs some or all of a hotel's search, advertising, social, email and reputation work. Agencies differ in what they measure, so ask for reporting by property and for AI answers as well as rankings.
How is hotel advertising changing?
Travellers are asking AI engines where to stay, and Google answers many hotel searches with an AI Overview. A hotel can rank and advertise well and still be left out of the answer.
