Zero-click search: what it is and what it means for a local business

By Cloute · Published October 2, 2026

The short answer

A zero-click search is one that ends without the searcher visiting any website, because the answer appeared on the results page itself or inside an AI answer. For a local business it means the decision is often made before anyone reaches your site, so what matters is whether you are the name in the answer. On a first measurement, 70% of the AI answers Cloute analysed named a competitor or nobody.

Where zero-click searches happen

  • Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, which write an answer above or instead of the links.
  • The map pack and Google Business Profile, where a customer can call or get directions without visiting a site.
  • Featured snippets and knowledge panels.
  • Chat engines such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity, where the whole exchange happens in the answer.

People search Google for "zero click search" about 720 times a month in the United States. Search volumes are average monthly Google searches in the United States, from Google Ads keyword data, October 2026.

What changes for a local business

  • Website traffic stops being the whole picture. A customer can choose you, call you and visit without a click.
  • Being named is the new position one. An AI answer recommends a few businesses and puts one first.
  • Your website still decides the answer, even when nobody clicks through to it, because the engine reads it.

Across 64,441 AI answers about local businesses, engines named a business 84% of the time when they had opened one of its own pages while answering, and 16% when they had not.

How to measure what clicks no longer show

  • Answer share: the share of relevant AI answers that name the business, by engine.
  • First-pick rate: how often it is the first business named.
  • Calls, direction requests and bookings from Google Business Profile.
  • AI crawler visits to the site, which show the engines reading it.

Questions people ask

What is a zero-click search?

A search where the person gets what they need without visiting a website, from an AI answer, a map listing, a featured snippet or a knowledge panel.

Is zero-click search bad for local businesses?

Not by itself. A customer who gets your name and phone number from an answer can still call. It is bad for a business that is left out of the answer.

Does SEO still matter in a zero-click world?

Yes. AI answers are built from pages the engine finds and reads, so a site that can be found and understood still decides who is named.
