How do Google AI Overviews and AI Mode choose local businesses?

By Cloute · Published October 1, 2026

The short answer

Google AI Overviews and AI Mode build their answers from Google Search itself: pages Googlebot has crawled and indexed, ranked by Google's core systems, plus Google's own local business information from Business Profiles, such as ratings, reviews and hours. Google says a page needs no special markup or AI files to appear; it must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. In Cloute's data, AI Overviews named a local business 89% of the time when it had drawn on one of the business's own pages, and 33.4% when it had not.

Where do AI Overviews and AI Mode get their information?

  • Google's search index. Google says its generative AI features are rooted in its core Search ranking and quality systems.
  • Query fan-out. Google says both features may run several related searches across subtopics and data sources to build one answer.
  • Google's local business information. Google describes AI Mode showing local places with ratings, reviews and opening hours, drawn from its information about local businesses.
  • Google recommends keeping Business Profile information up to date, and lists Business Profile and Merchant Center among the ways to be visible in its AI responses.

Which crawler does Google use for AI Overviews?

Googlebot, the regular search crawler. There is no separate AI Overviews crawler to allow or block. Google-Extended is a different control: Google says it does not affect a site's inclusion in Google Search and is not a ranking signal there. Blocking Googlebot removes a site from Search, and with it from AI Overviews and AI Mode.

What can a business control?

  • Crawl access: robots.txt rules for Googlebot.
  • How much text Google may show: nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex.
  • Its Business Profile: name, category, hours, services and the reviews customers leave.
  • What its own pages say: plain answers to the questions customers ask, in the HTML Google crawls.

How do you measure visibility in AI Overviews?

Google reports clicks from AI features inside the Web search type of the Search Console Performance report, mixed with regular search traffic. It does not tell a business how often an AI Overview named it, or who it named instead. That has to be measured directly, by asking the questions customers ask, from where they ask them, many times.

What does not help?

  • Rewriting pages into AI-specific formats or chunks. Google says this is not required.
  • Inauthentic mentions. Google says chasing fake mentions does not help, given its spam systems.
  • Assuming a strong ChatGPT result means a strong Google result. In our data the engines answer differently for the same business.

Questions people ask

Do I need schema markup to appear in Google AI Overviews?

Google says no special schema.org markup is required. Structured data can still help with rich results in regular search.

Does my Google Business Profile affect AI Overviews and AI Mode?

Google recommends keeping Business Profile information up to date and names Business Profile among the ways to be visible in its AI responses. AI Mode shows local places with ratings, reviews and hours from Google's local business information.

Will blocking Google-Extended remove me from AI Overviews?

No. Google says Google-Extended does not affect inclusion in Google Search. AI Overviews use Googlebot and Google's search index.

Can I see AI Overviews traffic in Search Console?

Clicks from AI features are counted inside the Web search type of the Performance report, together with regular search. Google does not break out how often you were named.
