What is generative engine optimization (GEO)?

By Cloute · Published October 1, 2026

The short answer

Generative engine optimization, or GEO, is the work of getting a business, brand or page named and cited in the answers that generative AI engines write: ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews. Search engine optimization earns a position in a list of links. Generative engine optimization earns a place inside the answer. Across 64,441 AI answers about local businesses, engines named a business 84% of the time when they had opened one of its own pages while answering, and 16% when they had not.

Where the term generative engine optimization comes from

The name was introduced in a 2023 research paper, "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization", by researchers at Princeton, Georgia Tech, the Allen Institute for AI and IIT Delhi. They called an AI system that searches the web and writes one synthesized answer a generative engine, and studied what makes a source more likely to be used in that answer.

Interest has grown quickly. Americans now search Google for "generative engine optimization" about 4,400 times a month and for "answer engine optimization" about 2,400 times. Search volumes are average monthly Google searches in the United States, from Google Ads keyword data, October 2026.

How a generative engine builds an answer

  • It turns the question into one or more web searches.
  • It opens a handful of the pages those searches return.
  • It writes an answer from what it read, and names or cites the businesses and sources those pages support.

That middle step is where generative engine optimization is won or lost. A business the engine reads about is far more likely to be in the answer than one it only half remembers.

What generative engine optimization involves

  • Measuring: asking the engines the questions customers ask, many times, and counting who gets named.
  • Being readable: pages an engine can open without running scripts, that state the facts plainly.
  • Answering the question: pages that address what people actually ask, in the words they ask it.
  • Being consistent: the same facts about the business everywhere an engine looks.
  • Being present in the sources engines already read for that market.
  • Measuring again, on identical questions, because answers vary from run to run.

GEO for a brand and GEO for a local business

For a national brand, generative engine optimization is about being named for a category: the best project management software, the best running shoe. For a local business it is about being named for a place: the best dentist in a suburb, the Ford dealer near a town. Local answers change with where the question is asked from, so a local business has to be measured market by market and against the rivals in that market.

Questions people ask

Is GEO the same as AEO?

In practice, yes. Generative engine optimization (GEO) and answer engine optimization (AEO) both describe getting a business named in AI-generated answers. GEO comes from academic research on generative engines. AEO is the term more often used by local businesses and agencies.

Does generative engine optimization replace SEO?

No. Generative engines search the web to write their answers, so a crawlable site that ranks well still helps. GEO adds a second goal on top of ranking: being read, and then being named in the answer.

What do generative engine optimization services include?

A GEO service or GEO agency should measure how often each AI engine names the business against its competitors, do the work to raise that share, and report before and after on identical questions. Ask which engines are covered and how many times each question is asked, since a single run proves little.

Which engines does GEO cover?

The engines people use to decide: ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Claude, and Perplexity.
