How do you measure a business's visibility in AI search?
By Cloute · Published October 1, 2026
The short answer
Ask the AI engines the questions your customers actually ask, from the places they ask them, many times over, and count how often your business is named, how often it is named first, and who is named instead. Single checks mislead, because AI answers change from run to run.
The metrics that matter
| Metric | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Answer share | The share of relevant AI answers that name your business. |
| First-pick rate | How often you are the first business named. The one most customers act on. |
| Strongest rival | Which competitor is named most often in your market, and by how much. |
| Per-engine share | Your answer share on each engine separately. Customers do not all use the same one. |
| Sentiment | Whether AI speaks well of you when it names you. |
Mistakes that make the numbers wrong
- Asking once. Answers vary, so a single run can show you winning or missing by chance.
- Asking from the wrong place. Local answers depend on where the question is asked from.
- Changing the question wording between measurements. A before-and-after only means something when the wording and the engine are identical both times.
- Counting a broken engine. When an engine returns nothing for a period, its recovery looks like growth. Leave it out of that comparison.
- Hiding the misses. A fair number includes the questions and markets where the business is still behind.
What good looks like
On a first measurement, the businesses we analysed were named in 30% of answers. Across the businesses we work with, on their latest measurement, they were named 36% more often than their strongest local rival, and 49% of their mentions were the first recommendation.
Questions people ask
What is a good AI answer share for a local business?
It depends on the market. As a reference, businesses on a first measurement were named in 30% of answers in our data, and 70% of answers named a competitor or nobody.
How often should AI visibility be measured?
Monthly is enough to see trends, as long as each measurement repeats the same questions on the same engines.
Can I check AI visibility myself?
You can ask ChatGPT or Gemini a few questions, but a handful of manual checks is too small to separate a real change from normal run-to-run variation.
