How long does AEO take to work?
By Cloute · Published October 1, 2026
The short answer
It depends on the engine. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude search the web live when answering, so a change can show up within weeks once the engines read it. Google AI Overviews draw on Google's own index and ranking systems, which usually move more slowly. What an engine knows from training changes only when a new model is released. In Cloute's published case study, the share of AI answers naming Karl Malone Ford went from 70% to 90% on identical questions asked eight weeks apart.
Why do engines move at different speeds?
| How the engine learns about you | Engines | What sets the pace |
|---|---|---|
| Live web search while answering | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude | How soon their search finds and opens the pages that describe you |
| Google's search index | Google AI Overviews and AI Mode | Google crawling, indexing and ranking, the same systems behind regular search |
| Model training | Every engine, for answers given without search | The next model release, often months apart |
Most local questions trigger a live search, so the first two rows decide most local answers. That is why a business can see one engine move well before another.
What can a business expect, engine by engine?
- Perplexity and ChatGPT: often the first to reflect a change, because they search and open pages live for most local questions.
- Gemini and Claude: also search live, though each searches and reads in its own way, so their pace differs from ChatGPT's.
- Google AI Overviews: usually the slowest to move, because Google says these features are rooted in its core search ranking and quality systems.
- Answers without search: change only when the model itself is updated.
What does a real change look like?

The comparison counts only because the questions and engines were the same on both dates. A before-and-after that changes the wording, the engines or the places asked from cannot show how fast anything moved.
What slows results down?
- Pages AI crawlers cannot read, such as text that only appears after JavaScript runs.
- Blocking the search crawlers or live fetchers that engines use to answer.
- Different facts about the business in different places.
- A strong local rival that the engines already read about in many places.
- Measuring too rarely or too thinly to tell a real change from normal variation.
How should progress be judged?
- Monthly, on the same questions, engines and places each time.
- Per engine, so one engine moving is not hidden by another standing still.
- Against the strongest local rival, not only against your own earlier number.
- With the misses kept in, so the total reflects the whole business.

How long does it take to show up in ChatGPT?
ChatGPT searches the web live for most local questions, so changes can appear within weeks once it reads them. Judge it on repeated measurement of the same questions, not a single check.
Why is Google AI Overviews slower than ChatGPT?
AI Overviews draw on Google's index and its core ranking systems, so they move at the pace of Google crawling, indexing and ranking pages, which is usually slower than an engine that searches live.
Can AEO results be guaranteed?
No honest provider can guarantee what an AI engine will say. What can be promised is careful measurement on identical questions and engines, so you can see whether it is working.
How long before I know if AEO is working?
Expect live-search engines to show movement first. In Cloute's published case study, Karl Malone Ford went from 70% to 90% of AI answers naming the store on identical questions eight weeks apart.
