AEO vs SEO for a local business: what is the difference?
By Cloute · Published October 1, 2026
The short answer
SEO earns a local business a place in a list of search results. AEO earns it a place in the answer an AI engine gives, which usually names only a few businesses and puts one first. The two overlap, since AI engines search the web, but success is measured differently: rankings for SEO, how often the business is named for AEO.
| SEO | AEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Where the customer sees you | A page of links and a map pack | A written answer in ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity or Google AI Overviews |
| What winning looks like | Ranking near the top | Being named, and named first |
| How many businesses win | Ten links, three map spots | Usually a handful, one first |
| What is measured | Rank and clicks | Answer share, first-pick rate, who is named instead |
| How stable it is | Fairly stable day to day | Varies from run to run, so it has to be sampled repeatedly |
Why the difference matters
On a first measurement, 70% of AI answers about a local business named a competitor or nobody. A business can rank well in classic search and still be missing from the answer, because the engine builds its answer from the handful of pages it opens, not from the full results page.
That reading step is the biggest single difference we see. In 64,441 answers, a business was named 84% of the time when the engine had opened one of its own pages and 16% when it had not.
Which matters more in 2026?
Both, for different customers. SEO still brings clicks from people who browse results. AEO decides what happens when a customer asks an assistant to just tell them where to go, which is a growing share of local decisions. A business that only measures rankings cannot see whether it is losing the second group.
Questions people ask
Can good SEO make me visible in AI answers?
It helps, because AI engines search the web. It is not enough on its own: the engine names the businesses whose pages and sources it reads while answering, which is a narrower set than the results page.
Do I need a separate AEO strategy?
You need a separate measurement at least. Without counting how often AI names you, and who it names instead, there is no way to know whether you are winning the answer.
