AEO agency or AEO software: which should a business choose?

By Cloute · Published October 1, 2026

The short answer

Choose AEO software if you have a marketing or SEO team that will run a tracking platform every week and act on what it shows. Choose a managed AEO service, an agency, if you want someone else to measure and do the work, and you judge them on the result. For a local business without an in-house team, a managed service usually fits; for a brand with a content team, software usually does.

When should you choose software?

  • You have a marketing, SEO or content team with time to act on what the tool shows.
  • You are a national brand and care about how AI describes the brand as a whole.
  • You want to set your own prompts, countries and competitors, and change them often.
  • You are an agency running AI visibility for several clients.

When should you choose a managed service?

  • Nobody in the business has hours each week to run a tool and act on it.
  • You run one or several storefronts, and the question is whether AI names you or the competitor down the road.
  • You want each location measured against its own local rivals, from the towns customers ask from.
  • You want to judge the provider on a measured result, not on activity.

What do AI engines recommend when buyers ask?

In the October 2026 AEO Vendor Visibility Index, the five vendors most often named by ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity were Profound (32.9% of answers), Semrush (32.2% of answers), Otterly.AI (25% of answers), Yext (23.9% of answers), Peec AI (22.1% of answers), all software platforms. Agencies were named less often overall but, when named, were often named first: First Page Sage appeared in 10.1% of answers and was named first in 6.5%, Thrive Agency 9% and 6.5%.

That means the shortlist an engine gives a buyer depends on how the question is asked. Ask for tools and you get platforms; ask for someone to do it and you get agencies. Decide which you need before you ask.

What should you ask either kind of provider?

  • Does it measure each location separately, against that location's own local rivals?
  • Which engines does it cover? ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews all answer local questions, and differently.
  • Does it repeat each question, so a change can be told apart from run-to-run variation?
  • Are before-and-after comparisons made on identical questions and engines?
  • Does it publish how it counts?
  • For a service: what will it report every month, and does that report include the misses?

Can you combine the two?

Yes. Some businesses keep an SEO suite or a listings platform their team already runs and add a managed service for AI visibility. The thing to avoid is paying for software nobody opens, or for a service whose report cannot show a like-for-like change.

Questions people ask

Is an AEO agency better than AEO software?

Neither is better in general. Software suits a team that will run it and act on it; a managed service suits a business that wants the work done and the result reported.
