SEO for dentists in 2026: dental SEO now includes AI answers
By Cloute · Published October 2, 2026
The short answer
SEO for dentists is the work of getting a dental practice found when patients search for a dentist or a treatment near them. In 2026 that means two results: where the practice ranks on Google, and whether AI engines such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews name it when a patient asks who to see. When Cloute tested 2,972 dental practice websites, 3.4% turned away a plain automated request and 2.3% blocked Perplexity's crawler in robots.txt.

What dental SEO covers
- Google Business Profile with correct hours, services and insurance information.
- A page for each treatment the practice offers, written for patients.
- Pages for the neighbourhoods and towns patients come from.
- Reviews: how many, how recent, and whether the practice answers them.
- Dentist and team pages with credentials stated plainly.
- Technical health: speed, crawlability and a site that works on a phone.
What changed: patients ask AI
A patient who asks an AI engine for a dentist who takes their insurance, sees children or does implants gets a short answer with a few names. Across 64,441 AI answers about local businesses, engines named a business 84% of the time when they had opened one of its own pages while answering, and 16% when they had not.
What the dental website study found
- Dental sites are easier for automated visitors to reach than dealer sites: 3.4% refused a plain request, against 29.5% of car dealership sites.
- Robots.txt is where dental sites lose an engine. 68 of 2,972 practices block PerplexityBot, and 60 of those use the same website provider's template.
- 1.4% sent a near-empty homepage to a visitor that does not run JavaScript.
What a practice should check
- Open your robots.txt and look for PerplexityBot, OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User. If any is disallowed, that engine cannot use your pages.
- State insurance accepted, treatments, hours and emergency availability in plain text on your own pages.
- Keep the practice name, address, phone and hours identical on your site, Google and every directory.
- Ask the AI engines the questions patients ask, many times, and count which practice they name.
Cloute measures every practice each month on ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews against the local rivals customers weigh it against, and its team does the work to move the result.

What is dental SEO?
Dental SEO is search engine optimization for dental practices: getting the practice found for dentist and treatment searches nearby. Americans search Google for "seo for dentists" about 1,300 times a month. Search volumes are average monthly Google searches in the United States, from Google Ads keyword data, October 2026.
Does dental SEO help a practice show up in ChatGPT?
Partly. AI engines find pages through web search, so good SEO gives them something to open. Being named also depends on whether the engine is allowed to read the site and finds facts that answer the patient's question.
Do dental websites block AI crawlers?
Most do not. 2.3% of the 2,972 dental sites tested block PerplexityBot in robots.txt, most of them through one provider's template that the practice may not know about.
What should a dental SEO company report?
Rankings and new-patient calls, plus how often each AI engine names the practice, how often it is named first, and which practice is named instead, on the same questions each time.
