Hotels in Columbus: can AI read their websites? 53 tested
By Cloute · Published October 2, 2026
The short answer
Cloute requested 53 hotel pages in the Columbus, OH area in October 2026 as a plain automated visitor. 32 of them (60.4%) could not be read, below the 63.9% measured across 2,280 hotel pages in 58 US metros. It matters for Columbus hotels because AI engines such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity name the places their sources describe, and a hotel's own page is the one source that speaks for the hotel itself.

Why it matters for hotel SEO in Columbus
A traveller who asks an AI engine where to stay in Columbus gets a few names. Across 64,441 AI answers about local businesses, engines named a business 84% of the time when they had opened one of its own pages while answering, and 16% when they had not. When an engine cannot open a hotel's own page, it answers from booking sites and review sites instead.
What a Columbus hotel should check
- Ask the AI engines the questions travellers ask, many times, from the cities guests travel from, and count which hotel they name.
- Check that parking, shuttle, pet policy, breakfast and distance to nearby landmarks are stated in plain text wherever the hotel is described.
- Check that those facts match on Google and on the booking sites.
- If the hotel is on a brand website, ask the brand how the site treats verified AI crawlers.
How this was measured
Each hotel's own page, as linked from its Google Maps listing, was requested once in October 2026, identifying as an ordinary web browser, without running JavaScript, from one network location. A page counts as not read if the answer was an HTTP 403 or 429, a bot-challenge page, or no answer within 10 seconds. We never sent a request pretending to be an AI crawler, so these figures describe how a site treats automated clients in general. A brand can let verified AI crawlers through while refusing other automated clients.
