AI visibility for Chevrolet dealers: 140 Chevrolet dealer websites tested

By Cloute · Published October 2, 2026

The short answer

When a buyer asks an AI engine which Chevrolet dealer to visit, it names the stores whose pages it can open and read. Cloute tested 140 Chevrolet dealer websites in October 2026: 12.1% answered a plain automated request with a block or a bot challenge, against 29.5% across all 2,915 dealer sites tested. Every Chevrolet dealer sells the same vehicles, so the answer goes to the store whose own pages say more than the manufacturer's listing does.

What we found on Chevrolet dealer websites

  • 17 of 140 Chevrolet dealer websites (12.1%) answered a plain automated request with an HTTP 403 or 429 or a bot-challenge page.
  • That is well below the 29.5% across all 2,915 dealer sites tested. Dealers named for a manufacturer brand averaged 14.6%, and all other dealers, mostly independent and used car stores, averaged 39.7%.
  • None of the 140 sites blocks an AI search crawler in robots.txt.
  • Of the 123 sites we could read, none sent a near-empty homepage without JavaScript.
  • The website platforms we saw most among the sites we could read were Dealer.com (43), Dealer Inspire (39), DealerOn (36).

What Chevrolet buyers ask AI

  • Which Chevrolet dealer near me has a Chevrolet Silverado in stock?
  • Best Chevrolet dealer for service on a Chevrolet Equinox?
  • Where should I buy a used Chevrolet Tahoe?
  • Which Chevrolet dealer gives fair trade-in values?
  • Is there a Chevrolet service department open on Saturday near me?

Why one Chevrolet dealer gets named and another does not

The manufacturer's website and dealer locator describe every Chevrolet store in a region the same way. They tell an engine a dealer exists, not why a buyer should choose it. What separates stores is what each one's own pages say: service hours, which models are in stock, how trade-ins and financing work, and the towns it serves. Across 64,441 AI answers about local businesses, engines named a business 84% of the time when they had opened one of its own pages while answering, and 16% when they had not.

What a Chevrolet dealer should check

  • Ask your website provider how its bot protection treats verified AI crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, Claude-User and PerplexityBot.
  • Search your server logs for ChatGPT-User. If it never appears, ChatGPT is not reading your site when buyers ask about you.
  • Check that brands, service hours, models serviced and the towns you serve are in the page source, not only loaded by scripts.
  • Ask the AI engines the questions your buyers ask, many times, and count which dealer they name.

How this was measured

Each site's homepage was requested once in October 2026, identifying as an ordinary web browser, without running JavaScript. We never sent a request pretending to be an AI crawler, so these figures describe how a site treats automated clients in general. Sites were collected from Google Maps listings for car dealerships, one site per domain. A site was counted as a Chevrolet dealer when the dealership's listed name included the brand. Cloute is not affiliated with Chevrolet or its manufacturer.

Questions people ask

How does a Chevrolet dealer show up in ChatGPT?

ChatGPT searches the web, opens a few pages and names the dealers those pages support. A Chevrolet dealer is named when its own pages can be opened by AI crawlers and state plainly what it sells, services and offers, in the towns its buyers ask from.

Do Chevrolet dealer websites block AI crawlers?

Rarely in robots.txt: 0 of the 140 Chevrolet dealer sites we tested do. Bot protection is the more common barrier. 12.1% answered an automated request with a block or a challenge.
